If you are interested to develop a website then you must have a specific terget for which purpose you are going to develop it. Suppose you are going to develop it for your company then you should collect sufficiant information that should be convayed to the customers or visitor. You should emphasize on your product and services thats makes you company unique. Similerly you can develop a site for you super store, Schools, Training centers, Service centers etc.

Would definately agree in getting plenty of content for a site before you start building it, makes it so much easier

Some people develop websites not for something that already exists, like me building a directory out of thin air. That is another story though, but yes content is important.
