|
|
Hey ya'll,
I thought of starting a Glossary of Computer terms on PC101 but then it occured to me that maybe a WIKI would be more interesting. Ya know... something to which my members can contribute... develop...etc...etc..
What do you think?

There are already quite a few wiki computer glossary sites. I'm sure that some of them are published under GPL or a Creative Commons license. Just take what they have and start by modifying their content. That's one idea ... _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

There are some real Wiki addicts out there. Find them, use them.
Most importantly, MAKE CONSTANT CONTENT BACKUPS. You will be spammed.
To help prevent it, I suggest you make people register to edit/post, and make sure you have a CAPTCHA image verification system. _________________ www.nerdcouncil.com - Forums are finally done!!! |

Hey SEO,
When you say "take what they have" do you mean it's an open source wiki?? I never found one.
Hey htmlmaster,
Lord, like I don't have enough problems with spamming. Maybe I should hold off on this! lol Or... I wonder... would it be possible to code it/make it in such a way that only members of the regular forum would be able to post on the wiki glossary?

Wikipedia is published under the license GNU Free Documentation License, so you can use its content legally as long as you give credit to Wikipedia. You can also use the following search engine
http://search.yahoo.com/cc
in order to find content published under Creative Commons licenses. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

| They even provide database backups for download. to start your own wiki you would need a LARGE user base. |

For a start, if you're planning on opening one up, you could either,
1) Go with an open source one, MediaWiki is probably one of the best, heck! Wikipedia themselves are using it.
2)There are many/few, dunno, automatic Wiki installers to their own website, i.e in a form of a subdomain. Can't really remember which, I read about some on TechCrunch. _________________ Gunbound Aimbot |

I never thought about this, but I think it's a good idea. I don't use wikipedia that much, but the system is starting to be widely used and popular. Good idea indeed ... Keep us posted on how it goes. I might try something like this too ... _________________ Webmaster Tips & Tricks - Music forums - Movie forums |

People don't start contributing just for fun. There are exceptions, but generally speaking, it's just not the case. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, but wiki is not magic bullet or magic pill. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

Regards | Also you can't just write three or four sentences on each page. You need to create a real content. You need to take time and write a good article. It's very time consuming. It's not like that writing becomes so easy because you use Wiki. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

seo you prove a point. But he/she can always pay for content writers and since you're talking about a computer-related wiki, I'm sure lots of people will be cool with writing for some money...
There are many places to put up writing offers, for one try a search for "digitalpoint forum". I wouldn't post the link as it is a competitor... _________________ Gunbound Aimbot |
