Well pros are that you have full control, its yours, and you can basicly edit anything.

Cons: cost, security, etc

Why does it cost much? What if you use free BBS like phpBB?

Pro's
- expert in your field
- information website, a central point for members
- connected 'main' website that offers products linked to the interest area of the forum, mine is money saving tips/financial discussion, the main site is for comparing deals on finance products - so both are VERY linked.

Con's
- devotion of lots of time answering posts
- getting people to actually register
- ejecting people registering on the forum with only the intention of SPAMMING

I think the benefits of a forum out-weigh the con's

It takes tremendous amount of time and effort to get forum up and running. That's for sure.

Definitely a load of time and effort! Of course, an advertising budget could make things a whole lot easier!

A lot of people start from free hosting or cheap hosting plan with forum hosting option. I think that's totally fine, but from what I hear and read, there are number of restrictions. You kind of need to have your regular hosting plan and host your forum in the end.

Always host your own - to be able to have full control over your board, and to not look unprofessional, don't go for a free forum host.

I can only find pros. I had my share of sleepless nights, I have thousands of work hours put into them. Still I love all this, I love the thrill of creating a new one, of seeing new members, of creating a nice thread and seeing it being replied to. I have learnt a lot and met some great people on my way Smile

I encountered number of problems, when I got my first dedicated server. I was actually doing a lot more than just hosting a forum though. Web server went down for variety of reasons, and it was quite frustrating every time. My server has been stable for some time now though.
