Ok, but here's the thing. This forum is powered by phpBB. This forum is a very small forum; it only has about 4k posts in total. However, how many forums powered by vB get to this point? A small percentage of all forums powered by vB get to this point, i.e., accumulate 4k posts in total. So, how is vB so superior?

I'm not saying that it's not. But the question I'm asking is "Does vB have some magical power to boost post count?" I think the answer is No.

absolutely not
the software you use will not determine the success of your forum

But it will certainly affect how far you can take your forum if you want

I've worked my forums for 2 years already. Cannot yet say they are profitable, but little by little I'll be able to monetize.

Phpbb and smf comes with a lot of mods anyway. Vbulletin really looks professional. You can still buy phpbb forum templates or hire someone to make them look a lot more professional.
I think what counts is the content of the site and how you make the community feel in the forum.
To answer the question, I think a bit less than a year (I , myself hopes so).

I find that one of the fastest ways to make your forum profitable is the following:

1. Pick a sector in which marketers are already spending a lot of money advertising such as business, finance and shopping.

2. Exchange posts or pay for posts and acquire at least 3000 posts.

3. Acquire a fair number of inbound links

4. Sell text link ads.

... and this can be done in less than a year.

unfortunately text link ads are frowned upon by google, and sooner or later may cause you to be penalised

If your forum is big enough, and you have a, lets say, moderate PR, you could get some not bad cash put of sitewide links.

I also don't agree with the VB/PHPBB argument. Surely people don't join a forum to see the features???

One question with the sitewide links - how many do you think could be gotten by a forum? 5? 10? more?

Also, and this is for SEO, Altyfc et al - do you think this would be a better avenue for MDB or would it be better to use the previous suggestion of receivelinks for instance?

Can you elaborate on this?

Also what's MDB?

I mean, how many sitewide links do you think would be a reasonable number to sell... before it's too many? (can't exactly have 100's...)

MDB Wink
http://searchenginewatch.com/ has about 5 text link ads directly link to advertisers.
http://www.databasejournal.com/ has about 15 text link ads directly link to advertisers.
http://www.internetnews.com/ also has about 15 text link ads directly link to advertisers.
http://www.internet.com/ same.

These major sites have about 15 - 20 text link ads, and that seems to be the standard.
