Has anyone used Aardvark Post Exchange post exchange? If so, what was it like? Did you get much out of the exchange? Pros? Cons?

I had used this system a while back, I think that it was in December. I liked the system and the members made good posts, however it was kind of convoluted and you had to keep track of all of your posting activities by hand, which in the end became too hard so I had to leave the system.

I still use this.

Pros:

1. I receive about 250 posts or more every month consistently.

2. I do receive a fair number of one-liners, but the over all post quality is good.

2.2. Good members, and they all take forum development seriously.

3. The systems has a couple of requirements like minimum post request. This makes sense to me. I don't see why any post exchange system needs to keep members who do not make a single post for a month or makes only 5 or 6 posts a month.

3.2. New member is required to make a certain number of posts to join in. This also makes sense to me. Some quality control is critical.

Cons:

1. You need to count your posts manually, which is kind of cumbersome, though it keeps accuracy.

It is that con that kills me.

I was posting a fair amount but then would foget to put my post count in and therefore was kicked out. I worked on getting back in and then was missing again.

The post counting is the biggest thing that PF has over the Aardvark system, and therefore probably one of the biggest reasons why I won't be re-joining.

However, web development is my hobby, if it was my job they would be one of the exchanges that I would use to develop my sites for sure Very Happy

It's tricky. Aardvark requires your active participation, so all members contribute and you receive a fair number of posts. But as you point out, keep track of your post count is a bit cumbersome. PostFusion does not require your active participation, so ... so many members just sit there and wait for some miracle to happen; automate post count system is very convenient though.

I don't know how I missed this thread. Very Happy

I appreciate the feedback... it would be nice to have something more automated but I don't know how realistic it is to expect automation to be foolproof. Neither of the two automated attempts that I have seen appear to have worked ultimately.

As for updating manually, it's not ideal, I know, but it really doesn't take that long to do.

Actually Post Fusion counts posts very accurately, but counting posts is not the most difficult part. The most difficult part is to calculates one's contribution accurately. More specifically, post exchange system should take the followings into consideration:

1. Post count
1.2. Post count of replies
1.3. Post count of thread starters
2. Number of characters in each post
2.2. Possibly number of words in each post
3. All of the above for the last 31 days in order to access activity level

But what happens when a board wipes some of its content, or perhaps even goes down.

This used to happen regularly with The Post Swap and I for one lost hundreds of posts I was owed as a result.

This is where a manual method wins over any automated equivalent IMO. Manual isn't ideal, but it is arguably more foolproof.

When a board goes down, all post counts are already recorded and stored in DB, so that doesn't affect total post counts. When a board wipes out posts, post counts also go down unfortunately, but it happened only twice so far. Also members who did this are no longer participating, so ... this hasn't been a critical issue. From what I experienced, counting posts itself is working almost perfectly.

Since January 05, so it's been around for some time. They have two groups:

Thanks, seo... you beat me to the questions. We're not a big exchange group, but I do like to think that where we lack in quantity, we make up for with quality. Smile

I don't find it difficult at all to keep track of my post count there. All I do is put a tally of the number of posts total on each forum next to the total for the previous month.

Then, as I post, I just subtract that figur from my current post count at the forum, and voila!!! It's as easy as that!

eg
Forum A:
Jan 06 - 30
Feb 06 - 60 (90)

So if in March my post count at Forum A is at 103, I know I've made 103-90=13 posts so far there, thus:

Mar 06 - 13

Easy as that, & near the end of the month I simply cycle through all the forums I post in and run my tallies up in that fashion - takes a few seconds each! Wink
