Server costs would be a big con, I expect slashdot is run on 10's of servers or more.
Forums are greedy on resources. I don't have any giant forums but I have some that usually have 100+ people online at any time. When the first one hit that amount of traffic I was forced to cancel my shared hosting account (i.e. kicked off by the host) and had to rent a dedicated server.

Same here actually. All my forums are small, and they can be all hosted on one server. No reason why I need multiple servers. I'd love to have that kind of problems.

Pro - Members are self-sufficient and only rely on the admin to fix bugs and add new features
Cons - A lot of bottom feeeders, spam and trolls, flames etc

Unknown - Profitability
I assumed that if you have a big forum, you can generate a big revenue, but this is apparently not always the case. It's not automatic at least. When I started setting up my forums, I was thinking that if you have like, uh, 100k posts+ forum, you can generate a pretty nice revenue automatically, but it isn't the case apparently.
