I've been taking the same approach for some time. Since I post in so many forums, it really becomes a part of my routine.

The best way to get indexed in my opinion is if you have network of sites with good PR and then just link to new one. It gets indexed in couple of days

I have found that if I link from my local business directory to new site that i build I usually get indexed very quickly, so i agree with iatbm

Yes I found it so easy to take off new sites since I have directories which are spidered by google daily. This is the greatest thing that I've done in terms of SEO. It is really nice to have your own little network so you don't depend on others to link to you.

Since reciprocal links will soon mean relatively nothing, I will only post on free directories which have a higher PR than myself (which is every free directory at the moment)

When your website gets a higher PR, will the fact that you're linked to from a lowe PR site have a negative effect on your website?

I am of the opinion that the way in which outbound links are created can have some negative effect on SEO. However, having permanent links from low PR site shouldn't have much negative effect, IMO.
