Do you think that general chat is important? If so, why? _________________ Online Education |

Every Forum must have General Off-topic chat so users can set their minds off the main topic. Also games are good for those forums and politics hehe for starting flame wars. The best thing is to make a topic on some really provocative subject that you know will drive some users nuts. You can get hints for those topics in daily news _________________ Soccer Forum

Yeah, I agree it's critical to make the forum a fun place to hang out. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

I agree that a general chat is good in most forums, but the focus on your forums should be everything but the general chat.
I see too many forums with more posts in the general section than in the rest of the forums all together...that's not how things should be. Think about it...people can go to any forum for that general chat section, but they can only go to your forum for the discussion on your given subject...capitalize on that...don't just give them something they can get anywhere. _________________ AdminFusion - Forum administrators and moderators |

Yep, agree, vital, I often sift through it looking for common themes that might need their own forum tho

I think it's an important forum. It's often the most active and gives your board the opportunity of always having something new and fresh. That, in turn, encourages people to come back more often.

| If you don't have a general forum you will find your other forums getting filled up with irrelevant posts. You need somewhere to put all those other topics. Not allowing off topic discussion would lose you significant traffic. |

That's a good point... it helps prevent legit topic-specific forums from getting drowned in chit-chat.

I didn't think it that way, but it makes sense. It certainly helps organization. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

It is only important in a sense that you need a place to dump all of the "off-topic" chat, and you need a place where people can just "shoot the shit" _________________ Webmaster Blog | Free forums | Free Hit Counter |

I asked on my forums something like "what's your favourite category in the forums?" and they answered "the general chat", most of them. They explained that even if we have a lof of interesting specialized categories they like to relax and chat a bit. This made me put more work into creating threads there _________________ Webmaster Tips & Tricks - Music forums - Movie forums |
