Signature links and word of mouth.

I do very little paid advertising because I've never seen great success with it in the past...maybe that's just because I haven't figure out how, who knows.

They are effective when you post in related forums or they can be effective in any forum?

They're most effective on direct competitors and least effective in forums totally unrelated...and everything in between. Be careful promoting via your signature in competitors' forums though...many will not allow this and even if they do, some of the members could raise an eyebrow. I tend to stay on the safe side and promote in forums that are similar, but not identical, to mine.

Hi

I think that good content is the key, lots of it and always being updated. I also display recent posts on other parts of my website via php includes. This gives ever changing content to main website and in turn that brings in more interest generally to the site as a whole.

Signature links are very good - also lots of premium advertising helps - adwords is one of the best to use.

Also, if you have an advertising budget, then adwords can work quite well, if you can get a decent set of keywords.

Yes, use a keyword generator - adwords has one built in but its best to use your own.

Hi

Or try using this

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

from Overture, it is a good source of keyword use in real searches

Do you display links to recent posts only or you also display a part of recent posts' content?

Hi

I do both, recent 10 posts on homepage and then parts of posts on my inner pages. It seems to work well.

How's it that working? Do SE bots visit your forum often?

Plenty of regular content is the key. If you've got that coming in, more and more members are likely to join and get involved.

That's why post exchanges like this the one I run can work well...

www.digg.com all the way!!! Submit an article and get 50 free unique visitors (on average). If you get lucky, you'll probably get over a thousand.
