Hi there,
How many of you sell your ad space directly [i.e an advertiser pays you and you put their ad up for them, rather than through an agency].
I personally find that it's the best way of generating revenue with forums.
Can anyone think of any disadvantages to using this method or any tips? _________________ |

Can be difficult, cumbersome or both to collect payments?
You need to market ad spaces by yourself?
Pricing can be tricky?
Difficult to approach bigger advertisers directly? _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

Yes, I agree with you there.
It can be difficult to collect payments, but having an agreement with advertisers that ensures they pay up [e.g if you don't pay within X amount of time intrest will be added] and taking down deposits for big orders helps.
I target smaller advertisers rather than big ones, and pricing ads takes a bit of time to work out - after a while you tend to find out for yourself a good price to sell your space at.
And I pick up most of my clients from forums and chat rooms - these can be a great soruce of advertising clients.
But once you've got a few ads running, your efforts will pay off. _________________ |

I sell my own ad space also.(Though I haven't had a decent site in a while to sell ads on)
I got most of my advertisers from webmaster forums and "friends" that run similar sites. _________________ Music Forum

I am using text-links-ads, private advertisers and google AdSense for revenue for webmastertalk.in
I always use Paypal Subscriptions for the private advertisers so there is not issues of delayed payment. If they cancel the subscription than I remove the ads from my forums. I also maintain an excel file with all the details. _________________ ••••• Real Value Hosting - Cheap and reliable Windows/Linux Hosting •••••

I do this, but not on forums, to a small extent. Unless it's a reasonably big deal (ie. £500-£1000+), I'm not too interested. For instance, recently I had someone contact me who wanted to buy an ad which was only going to cost £240 over 12 months. He wanted to pay for 6 months, and then renew for a further 6 months. For a small deal like that, I don't expect to hvae to work with instalments.
