Absolutely! You just need a lot of money to start off with, a good deal, some easy advertising, and a LOT of luck.
It's not very easy though... more often than not you lose money.

I have a reseller account so that I can host the sites for my clients, but don't really promote it much
it is fairly profitable in and of itself though

I agree, as a designer selling hosting is profitable as you can levy a charge that includes support which your client will want and trust. I do have a site where members of the public can sign up to our hosting but it doesn't get that many people.
I would say hosting is around 10% of our income and non design clients make up around 5% of those hosted with us.

I use reseller hosting to support my web design clients. The real money comes from the projects, but there's a small amount of residual income from the hosting

| Yes you can make money from web hosting but you have to know what you are doing and find someway to make your service unique because there is alot of competition out there. |
