Not so much as money making but better for kick off your new sites. If your directory is visited by SE bots often(once a day) then you are sure that your new sites will be in index quite soon after you put a link on frontpage of your directory

Yes, it can be. Our directories now get so many add url submissions that we're going to have to move to 'paid only'. How much revenue it'll generate I'm not quite sure yet but I reckon that if we charged $19 a time, we could probably still get a few paid requests per day.
