I didn't say that vBulletin will make your forum grow faster and be more successful...I said that having vBulletin over free, open source options, will make it easier on you to reach success. The reasoning behind this is that vBulletin has more features than any other free software out there (yes, it is true) and vBulletin also has the largest and most active mod and support community out there. This is not to mention the added security, stability, and customer support...
Like I said, you can still build successful forums off of phpBB, SMF, MyBB, PunBB, etc....but having vB will make things easier.
Say I take 10 hours of my time and build some phpBB forums...Now say I take 10 hours of my time and build some vB forums. I guarantee that the vB forums will be better off than the phpBB forums...but most of it comes down to how much time the admin is willing to dedicate - if you commit yourself to your forums, you will succeed, regardless of software
