Google seems to have changed its algorithm to analyze inbound links. Do you think that reciprocal links are totally dead?

Don't think so.
They're not as good as 1 way links, but they're definatly worth something.

I'm thinking that if they are highly relevant, then they can be valuable. For example, I can exchange links with other webmaster forums. Not 100 or 1000, but you know, ... like 10 or 20?

If a return link is your only option to get listed on a related site, then I certainly wouldn't turn it down. All related links are a good thing.

True. And not only for SEO, but also for visitors from that site.

How many reciprocal links, do you think, one site should have?

With all the free reciprocal link tools around, it makes sense to not pay too much attention to reciprocal linking (or even three-way linking) IMO.

What evidence is there for that figure? Or have you just plucked it out of the sky?

I don't think there's any optimum number of reciprocal links for a site. If you want to link somewhere, link there. If you don't, don't. I don't think you can say that a site should have a certain number of links, reciprocal or otherwise. It will depend on the site.

My guess is that reciprocal links acquired using reciprocal link tools are almost useless nowadays.

Actually taking the effort to exchange links with closely related web sites will still help you. The days of links for links sake are long gone.

I think so too. Design your sites for people. Let the search engines adapt. Wink
