|
|
I don't know about others here running phpBB forums but I have found the amount of (automated?) spam seems to have increased enormously this year. It's not unusual for us to get half a dozen seemingly automated spam posts across each of our forums each day. Often I see the same post across all forums, and across other forums not run by us.
What's the best way of tackling these kinds of posts? We already have image verification in place, and the "are you human" question.
Thanks

If they're not automated, then there is not a whole lot you can do. Maybe you can disallow new members to post a link until they make 5 posts or more. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

It cut back on some, but it still makes the board look messy.
If they are not automated there are people out there wasiting a lot of time by doing this. You would think that it would be cheaper and easier just to send out 100000 spam emails. _________________ Webmaster Blog | Free forums | Free Hit Counter |

The following is a thread to check:

(I haven’t really looked into this closely.)

Anti-Spam ACP
Author: EXreaction
MOD Description: Prevents spam bots registering on your forum by removing fields you want in registration and profile form until users reach certain requirements. If spam bot is detected, it sends an email notification to you with username, IP address, and more.
[2.0.20] registration disable website signature
Author: EXreaction
MOD Description: When a user registers the website and signature sections are hidden. If they enter in anything in the hidden fields(only a bot would do that) they are denied from registration and if you turned the IP ban on, their IP Address is automatically banned.
[2.0.20] ConfusaBOT ACP
Author: Espicom
MOD Description: Change "agreed" and "coppa" variables to confuse bots, with an Admin Control Panel interface.
[2.0.21] User Shield
Author: Wo1f
MOD Description: Hides usernames and corresponding profile data from all except the Administrator until activated. Manage (activate or delete) non-activated members from the memberlist.
[2.0.20] MOD Troll
Author: Kalipo
MOD Description: This MOD will prevent users designated as Trolls from posting, Private Messaging, Emailing, and generally make their life on the board miserable.
[2.0.19] AntiSpam Mod
Author: deMone
MOD Description: Protects your forum from automatically dispatched spam.
[2.0.19] Spam Words
Author: Joe Belmaati
MOD Description: Define some spam words in the ACP. When someone tries to post a defined spam word their post will not be entered into the database. Instead they will receive an error message. This could be handy for forums with guest posting where spam bots roam free. However, you may also specify that certain forums are exempt from the spam check.
[2.0.19] Invitation Only
Author: Kellanved
MOD Description: Adds an option to require new users to provide a passcode for registration.
Also adds an Admin Page to generate new passcodes.
[2.0.14] Log IP Address on Registration
Author: TerraFrost
MOD Description: Logs the IP address of users when they register.

We added that to one of our boards but a lot was still getting through.
The latest measure we're taking is to prevent users from posting a link if their total post count is three or less.
Hopefully that will stop what seems to be becoming an ever-growing problem.

By the way, isn't AdSense strange sometimes... at the top of this page at the moment, I'm getting an ad for 'Garage doors in Bournemouth'. How the hell is that contextual? _________________ Business Forums - Sport Forums - Travel Forums |

MOD Title:
Anti Bot Question Mod
MOD Description:
This mod is a text-based captcha to prevent spam bot registrations and spambot guest-postings. It is an alternative to the visual confirmation. A question, randomly selected from a question-pool, is added to the registration form and/or the posting form for guests. This question must be answered correctly to complete the registration or posting successfully.
The mod is administrated via the ACP. New questions can be added to the question-pool. Old questions can be deleted or edited. The Mod can be disabled/enabled for the registration form and the posting form separately.
This mod is compatible with the "Select Default Language Mod". Different questions can be defined for each language.
If you use the "Advanced Quick Reply Mod", you need the Advanced Quick Reply Add-On.
If you use the "Easy Contact Form Mod", you can use the Easy Contact Form Add-On
Description- and Mod-languages:
English, German, French
MOD Version:
1.0.3

This bot question mod should work very effectively. However, you can never really stop manual forum spam posts, and it appears that more and more people do this today. You just need to spend time in your forum and monitor posts. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |

A few days in now, and this is already working quite well for us.

since when I installed the "Stop Spambot Registration" mod for phpbb my spam bots registrations went from several (6- to 0, zero, nada!
I love this mod, and the concept is REALLY simple, it just tells you not to fill any additional field during signup, bots can't read this, and their registrations get declined _________________ ImageTemple.com | TutorialStream.com |

Anti-Spam bot question mod is the best phpBB anti-Spam mod. _________________ Travel News Online College Degree |
