There are number of paid services targeting webmasters, and paid link is one of them. What's your take on the service? Is there any company providing this service that you can recommend?

Well I suppose that it depends. I don't mind bying a link that will help the SEO of my site, or that particular page, or the number of visitors that I will get from that link.

However I don't like to buy links just for PR. I think that the days when PR was a HUGE deal in SEO are gone. I still like to have a bunch of high PR links to my new pages and if I am selling links PR of the page is one of the first things that I mention. However I don't think that the little green bar helps a whole lot in terms of conversions.

Webmasters focused on getting a bulk of inbound links in the past because they wanted to get higher PR. It seems that webmasters still focus on getting a bulk of inbound links; they do it for a different reason though. It seems that there are inbound links that really matter. The thing is that they can't really see what those links are. So, what do they do? They get a bulk of inbound links because, statistically speaking, they have a better chance of getting some quality inbound links that way.

I have a question about this: will getting inbound links from free directories help your site in any way?

Sure it will help since search engines will pickup on this and index your site more often and have more pages on their index linking to your site.

I've heard though that these free directories are viewed as 'link farms', and you can get penalized by SEs

Well it depends on the directory and how they exchange links but you have to be careful. Just look what happened to Link-Vault, they got banned from google.

hmm. I recently downloaded a free directory submission tool, it holds over 240 directories

do you think it's worth it to do the submissions? Or could I be damaging my site? One of my sites already has a PR4

The more (permanent) inbound links you have, the better. The higher PR you have, the better, though PR alone doesn't determine ranking. You want to check your outbound links carefully, but you really shouldn't be worried about inbound links.

As for a service to sell links, I recommend doing it yourself, you get 100% of the cost, it's worth it. Unless your managing tons of sites.

When I buy links I don't so much look for PR anymore, traffic and potential are far more important.

There are roughly two ways to sell links.

1. Create a search directory and get paid for each link.
1.2. You can also ask a small fee for processing a link submission within 3 days or so while you may take a month or longer to process a free submission.

2. You can also place a link on your regular site. You can also place site wide links.

It takes 5 minutes to install, and ... it takes less than a day to customize.

The key is to get PR and manage to get PR for all categories. A lot of webmasters claim that PR doesn't really matter today. True to a certain extent, but the fact of the matter is that webmasters do care about PR a lot. If your search directory has a high PR, you should be able to receive submissions pretty regularly.

how do I actually get PR on a new directory? I have a site that has pr4, could I install it on that domain and it would pick it up automatically?
