The best thing to do about debt is to not go into it, except for a house or maybe a car.
If you can't pay cash for it, then you won't be able to pay for it in the future - going into debt only means you pay more in the long run.
If you have a credit card be sure to only use it for large purchases, and if you do use it make sure you have the money ready the moment your statement comes through your letterbox.
That way, you can stay pretty much debt free and avoid situations like being millions of dollars in debt.

It's scary how you can get into a very serious trouble so quickly, and I have seen quite a few people who experienced this.
