Should you have a header navigation? Do you have to have one?

I don't have a navigation on the header. I find it best to put the navigation to the left of or below the header.

Navigation on all of your pages pointing to the main entry points on your site is important both for usability and crawlibilty

i don't think it really matter as long as it's in the header or on the left, people just expect to see it in one or the other (or both).

I often use both types of navigation. The header navigation is usually reserved for things like FAQs, contact and help pages, while the left-hand navigation is for content. This setup tends to work best on sites that have a lot of content categories, since they won't all fit in the header.

What do you think about a floating navbar like here for instance?

Also, do you think that it might work better on the right hand side by any chance? ie as you scroll down the page, the nevbar follows pretty much right next to your cursor, which then saves mileage on the trackball?
