I say left. People read that way ... at least most of the world. Myself I don't even have any right column at all. I have left navigation and then content on the right. But if I think it is really of web designer preference if he/she will go with left or right. I heard successful stories from left and right navis _________________ Soccer Forum

Left. My eyes are trained to go from left to right (as is the case with most English-speaking people). _________________ www.nerdcouncil.com - Forums are finally done!!! |

I like left also, but some good sites have the navigation on the right and it works for them.
I think that it may depend on the type of site. A content site maybe the Left is best, but for a Blog try the right. _________________ Webmaster Blog | Free forums | Free Hit Counter |

Yes I never thought of that. Almost all blogs have navigation on the right side ! _________________ Soccer Forum

Left and top navigation. I don't have sites with right navigation, don't know why. Maybe because I didn't design the layout this way _________________ Webmaster Tips & Tricks - Music forums - Movie forums |

What about a floating navbar on the right? We all know how lazy internet users are when in cyberspace - if it's floating on the right, right there by the scrollbar, you decrease the distance one has to move the mouse to get to the nav. If all internet sites did this, you'd cut mouse movement by 90%, people's mouses would thus last longer, which saves everybody money, making them all wealthier over time. This, in turn, gives them more available cash to pump back into the economy, which causes more job creation. More jobs results in less crime as standard of living increases, and people feel safer and happier. The happier people are, the nicer and friendlier a place the world becomes, and our children grow up in a more humane environment where love can grow. Under these conditions people are slower to anger, more calm and rational and war could become a thing of the past.
Well, either that or you could just carry on having you nav on the left. Whichever you think is better. _________________ WebWobot Search Engine & Forums | WebWobot PageTrade Multi-Exchange |

I have had good results with right side nav, and place ads on the left which increases click throughs. _________________ Gympie E-Business and community Forum |

The site i used for this experiment averages 50% more click throughs compared to when it had the standard left nav, right ads layout.
it doesn't work with all sites but it can be worth a try.
people get used to seeing ads at the top and left side of the page and develop banner blindness.
I know myself that i usually ignore ads on the right and top, most of the time even ones well matched to the site. _________________ Gympie E-Business and community Forum |

Agreed.
People said above the eye moves left to right. And that exactly why the content should appear as left as possible. People can navigate after they read the content that will keep them coming back.
Having ads all the way to the left is also good for the same reasons.
However when I was developing a site with a non web-dev-savvy friend of mine he was heavily put off by right navs. |
