I briefly looked into this once, and I heard that, if you were to start today, you'd want to start as a reseller. Is this true?

It is extremley hard to start up a new hosting company, there are so many out there. You'll be having no more than 2 new clients a month for the first three months unless you have a lot of traffic. The main source of customers will be word of mouth. Many of the hosts that will start up today will not be here in 6 months time.

Whenever someone asks about any business and asks the question, "Is it too late to get into so-and-so business", the answer is often no. "It's never too late. There is room for everyone. If you have perseverance, you can make it." I don't feel this way about hosting business, although I don't completely dismiss it; there is a small chance that I will get into it utilizing this platform, i.e., this webmaster/seo forum.

This is true it is never too late, but Web Hosting is very hard work and...support is one thing that absolutely have to be quick and efficient otherwise customers will go somewhere else. You have to know that 24/7 support is quite difficult to maintain and revenue to tell you the truth is not that good since companies are making offers of 4 dollars for reseller accounts with a lot of bandwith, disk space etc... quite competitive business = a lot of work.... You have to consider if time and money you invest is worth and are there other businesses which gets you bigger ROI......but it is fancy to own web hosting company Wink

But isn't it also true that once you acquire a consumer and he/she gets to a certain point, you wouldn't have to spend so much time or effort providing him/her support. No?

No support is always on high-demand. Don't look at things from yourself. Just because you don't need support doesn't that others won't Wink .... There are plenty of users who will ticket you just because you don't have latest software in fantastico. And they don't even use it but you have to answer anyway!

What if you set up your hosting service so that the consumer needs to pay for each ticket? Does that change the consumer's behavior?

Oh man that would be suicide I think. You can make simple basic hosting package without live support and then premium package with live 24/7 support and charge extra

... or you can drop price for regular hosting service and you can put price tag on each support ticket? I think that's what these guys do http://www.serverbeach.com/.

Can't find it but I'm pretty sure that one of major hosting companies offers hosting service like that. Generally speaking, hosting package is cheaper, but you'll need to pay for each support ticket.

Reseller Zoom has packages for as low as 5 dollars and support is free. If you take package for 30 dollars support is even live. Now that is cheap.... I don't see how to compete with that. I would rather spend my time and money on more profitable things.
