What's your take on banner ad? Is it a good way to generate revenue online? What's the best way to use banner ad? What are upsides? What are downsides?

You mean selling banner ads or placing them?

If placing them, I don't think it's such a great way. If I went down that route, I'd want to be paying on a per click (or per lead/action) basis only, not per impression.

I've used Adviva in the past, but it doesn't make as much as AdSense IMO.

I think that banner advertising is a thing of the past. People are blind to them so there is very few conversions.

If you are going to make money it would have to be on a high traffic site and you sell the impressions.

Adsense and other programs like it are the best way to make money if you are looking at PPC or impressions

I'm not 100% sure about this for a couple of reasons:

1. Pop-up and pop-under still pay well, so they have to be pretty effective.

2. One of bigger problems of banner ads is to not be able to target ideal audience effectively. However, networks like Google have introduced a way to run targeted banner ads. For example, Google crawls advertisers' sites and it displays banner ads fitting various themes. I haven't read or heard that this has been a wild success, but I haven't read or heard that this has been a disaster, either.

I am not a huge fan of the pops so I don't use them on my sites.

Actually there have been a couple of sites that I stopped using because they started using pops.

That said I do have a pop-under traffic service that I offer, as far as conversions go they aren't very good percentage wise but for the price you can get say.....50 conversions for $10

Banner ads are good because most of them are not intrusive as popups plus if you locate them strategically then you can get alot of clicks from them.

What do you mean by "strategically". I find that with banners, even if you make them relevant, even if you position them where the eye supposedly spend the most time... and so on... you still get a low CTR.

Well like you said you have to display them where people will see them. But it depends on how much traffic you get really for your CTR.

This is my point. I find that WHEREVER I display them, the CTR is still low.

I also don't understand what traffic levels have to do with it. CTR is a PERCENTAGE so regardless of whether you get 10,000 visitors a month, or 10 million visitors a month, the CTR should still be pretty much the same.

That's the thing. You want get paid for impressions, not clicks. That's how you want to get paid when you run banner ads. You want to offer brand advertisement.

I think it depends on the look, size and placement of the ad. Certainly Google ads are not the money makers they once were... unless you get huge traffic... but I think banner that relate to the site from merchents can be valuable.

I don't think that internet users respond to Google ads differently than they did in the past. Some adjustments need to be made though. For example, internet users generally run much higher resolutions today, so ad placement needs to be adjusted. There are so many blogs today. There needs to be an appropriate ad placement for blogs as well.
