It seems that many members have a lot to say about various BBS (Bulletin Board System(software)), so I'm creating number of threads to discuss the topic in more detail. Here's a thread to discussion about phpBB negatives.

Negatives :

1. easy crackable
2. hard to update when heavily modded
3. when you reach decent number of users unstable and you have to mod a lot !

4. The development is not making great progress, though updated versions get released pretty frequently. phpBB 3.x has been in development for many years.

5. Admin interface can be enhanced greatly.

-Too simple [imho]
-Very insecure
-Many security holes, requires lots of updates
-Unstable
-Uses more database space per post/topic than most other forums
-Inefficient

I will post more as I think of them.

It's a poor script out of the box and there are too many updates for the script. Other than that, it's a superbe script and if you know your business with it, then it can have some very nice results Smile

I agree for the most part, and I actually use phpBB all the time, but my gut feeling is that once you get to a certain point, i.e., once you start generating a certain amount of profit, I think it makes sense to use vB. That said, new version of phpBB will be released sometime this year, and that can be a significant improvement.

I've never had any security problems, but I assume those happen more with highly established forums. The Administration Panel is something that could use a huge overhaul though. The fact that you can't even see a full list of registered users is kind of surprising..

I think the admin area and admin tools need a lot of work

I really dont like PHPBB mainly because it is far too insecure! Also when I had a PHPBB forum it was hard to upgrade with the mod's I had installed.

We'll see how this will change in phpBB 3.0. Beta is out now.

phpBB 3.0 beta 1 is hopefully more like an alpha. It needs a lot of reworking in the Admin Control Panel. It's a huge improvement over what we had. But it's also sprawling and massive, with a myriad of redundant switches & paths.

I hope they plan to usability-test the hell out of it before going to a RC. Given the phpBB history, I kinda doubt it though.

Still, I'm hopeful, because I'm a phpBB mod developer.

If that's the case, I presume that you're planning to upgrade or already upgrading phpBB mods?

I already released some 3.0 mods, and got slapped down. The phpBB team was not happy with me, apparently. They don't want any mods out there until the thing goes FC.

They even deleted my posts on phpbb.com, so that no one would know about the mods. Sad

Even still, I'm hopeful.

More than welcome to start threads about your upgraded mods here if you'd like Smile .
